How to Stop Caring What Others Think: A Guide for Heart-Centered Entrepreneurs
As a coach, healer, or service provider, you’ve probably wrestled with this question: What will people think of me? It’s a question that can stop us from posting on social media, sharing our offers, or even speaking our truth. But what if you didn’t let that fear control you? Imagine how free you would feel if you truly didn’t care what others thought.
In this blog, we’ll dive into why this fear exists, how it impacts your ability to grow your business, and practical steps to start releasing it so you can be authentically visible.
Why Do We Care So Much About What Others Think?
Our fear of judgment is not irrational—it’s primal.
- Evolutionary Roots: Back in caveman days, rejection from the tribe could mean death. As humans, we are wired to seek acceptance and avoid judgment because it feels like survival.
- Childhood Programming: If you grew up hearing phrases like “Don’t rock the boat” or “What will the neighbors think?” you might have learned to suppress your true self to gain approval. This can lead to people-pleasing tendencies that carry into adulthood.
Your body also remembers these moments. That tight chest, lump in your throat, or racing heart before you post on Instagram or walk into a networking event? It’s your nervous system flagging potential danger, even though logically you know it’s not life-threatening.
How Fear of Judgment Keeps You Invisible
When we let the fear of what others think control us, we:
- Avoid showing up authentically online.
- Hold back from sharing our unique gifts.
- Miss out on connecting with aligned clients who need our message.
The truth is, your people can’t find you if you’re hiding. And those judgments you’re worried about? They’re often projections of others’ insecurities and have nothing to do with you.
Practical Steps to Stop Caring About What Others Think
1. Redefine What Feels Safe
To be visible, you need to feel safe being vulnerable. This starts by redefining what “safe” means:
- Titrate Your Vulnerability: Start small. Record a voice memo or write down your thoughts without sharing them. Gradually work your way up to posting or going live.
- Create a Pre-Visibility Ritual: Use grounding techniques like breathwork, movement, or journaling to calm your nervous system before showing up.
2. Reconnect to Your Why
Ask yourself:
- Who am I here to help?
- What do they need to hear from me today?
- What’s the cost of staying silent?
For me, my “why” is to help coaches and healers feel safe to be seen so they can share their gifts with the world. When I feel the fear creep in, this mission pulls me back into alignment.
3. Question Your Fear
Write down:
- What am I afraid people will say about me?
- Is it true?
- Do I need their approval to succeed?
Often, you’ll realize the judgments you fear are not only untrue but also irrelevant to your purpose.
4. Visualize Your Future Self
Picture your most confident, successful self 10 years from now. What advice would they give you about navigating judgment? Use that vision as a compass to guide your actions today.
A Loving Reminder
You don’t need to be liked by everyone to be loved by your people. The ones who resonate with your message will find you when you show up as your authentic self.
